Two Different Methods to Clean the EGR Valve

Model: (Various brands) Various
Part: EGR valve

Video tutorial

There are two methods to clean the EGR valve: mechanical cleaning and aerosol cleaning (without disassembly). The first requires physically removing the valve from the engine and is ideal for heavy carbon build-up, heavily caked valves, or when very evident symptoms have already appeared.

It yields effective and long-lasting results because it allows for cleaning the intake manifold and replacing the gaskets, but it requires time, equipment, and a certain level of skill, as components must be disassembled and gaskets replaced. Disconnect the battery, remove the valve, spray the cleaner, brush away the deposits, replace the gaskets, reassemble, and tighten to the correct torque.

The second method uses a chemical spray inserted into the intake duct and is perfect for preventive maintenance or light build-up; it is quick and simple but not a complete solution. If the valves are heavily clogged, the cleaning may be superficial.

Warm up the engine, access the intake duct, spray the cleaner in short bursts, and let the engine idle to burn off the residues.
