The Mistake of Removing the EGR Valve

Model: (Various brands) Various
Part: EGR valve

Video tutorial

The two experts in the video explain why removing the EGR valve is a serious mistake: EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Its purpose is to lower internal temperatures and reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, among the most polluting gases from diesel engines.

It is a legal requirement starting from Euro 4 (and onwards). The recirculated gases are not clean: they contain soot, oil vapour, and acid residues, which over time dirty the valves, manifolds, mass airflow sensor, and other components.

As a result, the car loses efficiency, consumes more fuel, jerks, and emits black smoke from the exhaust. Many think of blocking it to solve the issue, and initially, it seems to work better, but it is illegal.

If stopped, the car is non-compliant, and you risk not only a fine and a failed MOT but also vehicle impoundment. There are also risks for the engine: the ECU reads incorrect values; the DPF regeneration gets blocked; pressures and temperatures increase, risking damage to pistons and the turbocharger.

Not to mention that a Euro 5 diesel without EGR emits worse gases than a car from the 1990s.
