Part: Timing belt
Operation: Five signs of wear on the timing belt

There are five signs that our timing belt sends us to tell us it's worn out, and that we shouldn't ignore - let's see what they are. Before doing the inspection we need to remove the timing cover, although sometimes it will be necessary to remove some elements of the engine. 1) the timing belt is too tight, some gears could skip and timing is lost: the engine will run irregularly, there will be difficulty starting, loss of power and increased fuel consumption. We will have to check the timing markings, and that the belt tensioner is at the right degree of tension. 2) Leaks under the timing case indicate that technical fluids have deposited on the belt, which can slip or break. We'll have to check all the oil seals, that's before we change the belt. 3) Strange sounds come from the belt, which happen if the belt is badly worn, or misaligned or if the bearing is jammed. The noise directly depends on the engine speed. 4) Belt damage such as frays, cracks, tooth wear or fiber breakage. It must be replaced even if it is only the edge that is worn. Check the timing mechanism, and if necessary, install new components. 5) incorrect position of the belt. It is indicated by the axial movement of the belt relative to the pulley. The reason may be a poorly installed component or a faulty tensioner pulley. Incorrect belt position leads to uneven wear and breakage. The replacement of the belt is normally carried out at 50/100,000 km or 5 years, whichever occurs first.
