Repairing the LCD Instrument Cluster of the Volkswagen Golf IV

Model: Volkswagen Golf Golf IV, MK 4, Golf 4 - Years 1997-2003
Part: Instrument cluster

Let’s see what the procedure is for repairing the LCD display of the instrument cluster of the Volkswagen Golf IV (Bora). This is a job that requires soldering skills, complex assembly, and great precision. Start with disassembly. Remove the instrument cluster; open the cluster by removing the Torx screws and unclipping the covers. Carefully extract the indicator needles and unclip the electronic board from the front plastic, removing the frame of the faulty LCD display. Thermally isolate the nearby components with Kapton tape; then use a hot air desoldering tool to remove the old display from its soldered connector on the board. Clean the solder pads. Now solder an appropriate adapter board onto the pad of the board. Insert the flexible tape (FCP) of the new display - which can be found on the store website Minitools.com with code SEPDISP20 at a price of £74.10 + VAT (shipping costs not specified) - into the connector of the adapter board and secure it. Position the display in its place and fold the tape. Before reassembling everything, power the cluster and check if the display is functioning. If the display is lit but empty, measure some voltages on the board with a multimeter; between a specific point and ground, it should be between 11.5V and 12.5V. If all is okay, reassemble in reverse order: board, frames, needles (using a spacer for the correct height), covers, reinsert the cluster in the car and test.
