In the case of the Volkswagen Touareg, the gas struts are located directly inside the rear tailgate and can be accessed by removing the corresponding internal protection panel: to remove this panel, you will need to unscrew the screws that secure it to the tailgate. Once the panel is detached, you can remove the fastening pins at the top and bottom of the gas struts, extracting them from their housing. This will allow you to insert the new struts, securing them in place and reinstalling the panel.
