Replacing Valve Pushrod Seals

An overhead valve (OHV) engine is one where the valves are located in the cylinder head, and the camshaft that operates them is generally positioned just above the valve stems. There are also designs where the camshaft is placed inside the engine block (usually next to and slightly above the crankshaft in an inline engine or directly above the crankshaft in a V engine), using pushrods to operate the rockers above the cylinder head and consequently actuate the valves: this type is called a pushrod engine. The pushrods slide within tubes, at the ends of which seals are applied: to replace them, remove the rocker cover, disassemble the rockers, pull out the pushrods and then the tubes, remove the old seals, and clean all components; brush the seal seats, insert the new seals, and proceed in reverse for installation, also adjusting the valve clearance.
