What problems does the IMS bearing of the Porsche Boxster have?
Years 1996-2004

Answer

On the Porsche Boxster, in particular on the 986 and 987 series, the IMS bearing was installed, i.e. the intermediate shaft support that operated the camshafts. This bearing is known for its fragility, in fact the advice given to owners of these models is to replace it immediately with a non-original equivalent. Damage to this bearing causes the cams to be out of phase, which in turn does not allow efficient adjustment of the valves: this causes serious damage to the engine.
