To change the alternator belt on the BMW GS 1200, start by placing the motorcycle on its centre stand. Remove the five fastening screws to take off the black plastic cover that protects the belt housing; the presence of the crash bar may complicate the removal of the cover. With the engine off, engage sixth gear. Use a sturdy strap on the belt to help pull it outward while, with assistance from another person, rotate the rear wheel. By pulling on the strap, the belt will come off the lower pulley, allowing you to remove it. Position the new belt by placing it on the upper pulley and resting it on the lower one. Gradually rotate the rear wheel, still in sixth gear, to position it correctly in its housing.
