The gear parts are usually intact, so it is more cost-effective to change just the motor. Remove the mirror glass and the plastic housing. Disconnect the electrical connector. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the screws that secure the motor and pull it out. Install the new motor, reconnect the connector, and reattach the glass. If you purchase the complete motor block with gears, you can disassemble it and replace all internal parts, leaving the original shell.
