This guide describes how to replace the engine oil and oil filter on a Harley Davidson Sportster 1200. Obtain 3 litres of Harley Davidson Genuine Oil SAE 20W50 and an HIFLO HF170B oil filter. Position the motorcycle on the central lift. Start the engine, allow it to reach temperature, and then switch off. Place a container for the used oil underneath the engine. Use a screwdriver to loosen the clamp holding the plastic oil drain plug. The plug is located at the rear bottom of the engine, either fitted into a rubber tube or secured with a clamp to the rear frame. Allow the oil to drain and clean the plug thoroughly. Use a socket wrench to remove the oil filter located on the lower left side of the engine, front part. Lubricate the gasket of the new oil filter and screw it in by hand. Refit the oil drain plug. Lower the motorcycle from the lift and place it on the side stand. Open the oil filler cap located on the right side of the oil tank. Pour in 2 litres of oil and start the engine for one minute, ensuring the oil warning light goes out, then switch off. Check the oil level on the dipstick and add oil up to the maximum level.
