Timing chains are designed to last a long time. Often for the entire life of the engine, and generally do not require periodic replacement like belts; however, there are exceptions and considerations: if the vehicle is used in so-called "severe service" conditions, such as in city with heavy traffic, towing, dusty or gravel roads. In these cases, manufacturers recommend more frequent inspections or shorter replacement intervals, obviously for a belt, but also to be considered for a chain.
