There is no difference, when it comes to battery replacement, between a motorcycle key and a car key; in fact, the process is almost identical. This video explains how to perform this task for a KTM in general, not just for the KTM 1290, as the keys are similar across different models.

So, let's see how to do it: Grab the shell of the key, push its back, slide it off, and remove it. Now let's take off the battery protection cap and extract the old battery, replacing it with the new one. Now we follow the reverse procedure to reassemble everything and complete the job.
