This guide explains how to replace the engine oil and oil filter on a KTM 990 SM LC8. Obtain 3 litres of Motul 7100 SAE 10W60 oil and an HIFLO HF650 oil filter. Position the motorcycle on its stand. Start the engine, allow it to reach operating temperature, and then turn it off. Place a container for collecting the used oil under the engine. Using a ratchet and a 19mm socket, unscrew the oil drain plug located under the engine. Allow the oil to drain and clean the plug thoroughly. Using a ratchet and an 8mm socket, unscrew the cover located under the right side casing and remove the filter element from the casing. Using a ratchet, unscrew the two 8mm screws of the oil filter cover located under the left side casing. Remove the filter with pliers and replace it with the new one. Unscrew the second oil drain plug using a ratchet and a 13mm socket. The plug is located in front of the left side engine casing, beneath the oil tank. Allow all the oil to drain. Using a ratchet and an 8mm socket, unscrew the two screws of the cover located to the left of the plug and remove the filter element. Reassemble everything. Open the oil filler neck located on the left side of the oil tank and pour in three litres of oil. Start the engine and allow it to warm up, then turn it off and check the oil level.
