Detailed instructions - To replace the glow plugs on a Nissan X-Trail 1.6 dCi (R9M engine), take care to avoid breaking them. The typical symptom is the engine light on with codes P0380-P0384. Generously spray a penetrating fluid (like Liqui Moly) around the glow plugs and let it sit, preferably overnight, to soften any deposits and carbon. Disconnect the battery and remove the electrical connectors from the glow plugs by gently pulling the tab. For removal, use a long 10 mm socket (the glow plugs are M10x1) and a torque wrench. Loosen carefully: the torque is 15-20 Nm, but after years of carbon, they may be tougher. If they do not unscrew easily, do not force them: they risk breaking, making removal a nightmare. Before installing the new ones, check their functionality by briefly connecting them to the battery: they should glow red. For installation, apply a specific glow plug grease, such as LiquiMoly Pro-Line available on Amazon with code B01FHTGWZK for £13.96, with free delivery. Screw in by hand and tighten to 15 Nm with the torque wrench. Reconnect the connectors. After replacement, clear the error codes with a scanner. Symptoms of faulty glow plugs include difficulty starting in cold weather, white smoke from the exhaust, and irregular idle.
