Before installing the new cylinder head gasket, it is essential to check that the previous overheating has not warped the surfaces of both the cylinder head and the block: use a straight edge and a feeler gauge to exclude any warping; then, re-tap the threads of the head mounting holes with a tap of the appropriate diameter and pitch, ensuring that no debris ends up in the cylinders; assess the piston travel at top dead centre relative to the block to exclude any contact with the valves; then apply the locating dowels, the new cylinder head gasket, and the cylinder head itself, using a new set of bolts for fastening, applying copper grease on the bottom of the thread and under the head; finally, use a cross-tightening pattern to tighten the bolts with both the torque wrench and the calibrated wrench.
