How to replace the thermostat of a SAAB 900 MK1

Model: Saab 900 MK 1 - Years 1979-1994
Part: Thermostat

Let's see how to replace the thermostat on a SAAB 900 MK1: we find the replacement part on eBay with the EAN code 5412571987591 at the price of 10.99 euros + shipping costs of 9.95 euros. We wait for the engine to be completely cold, and open the cap of the expansion tank to release the residual pressure. The thermostat is located in an uncomfortable position, near the distribution. We have to disconnect the coil cables, which are often fixed with a clamp and a tube. We unscrew the nut that secures the support to the tube, then partially empty the coolant tank, because it will start to leak out. Now we remove the thermostat, unscrewing the two bolts that secure the thermostat housing to the engine, then remove the cover and the thermostat. Clean the contact surfaces of the cover, removing any traces of the old gasket, place the new thermostat in its place (pay attention to the relief valve, which must be positioned upwards, as with the old one!), install the new gasket, reassemble the tube support, reconnect the electrical connector, top up the coolant in the expansion tank, start the engine and let it warm up, checking that the air is expelled from the system (check the coolant level) and check for any leaks.
