To remove the old and damaged knob, use a screwdriver to lever at the bottom where the clips are located; this will release the gaiter. Pull it up and you'll find a clip holding the knob to the gear lever; open it with a screwdriver. Take this opportunity to clean the gear lever. Now insert the gaiter, ensuring the gear pattern is facing the correct way! Tighten the clip onto the gear lever and snap the clips back into place. Job done.
