Let's see how to dismantle the key of a Smart 450 (the model produced between 1998 and 2007). You only need a small flat-head screwdriver. Look for the line of junction between the two halves of the casing: the best gap for leverage is usually near the attachment of the keyring. Insert the tip of the screwdriver into the gap, giving it a slight twist, and the two plastic shells will start to separate. Inside, you will see the battery housed in its seat; use the screwdriver to pry out the battery, which is a CR2016. Insert the new battery, paying attention to the polarity, reposition the two halves of the casing, pressing firmly until you hear the "click" of closure.
