The first precaution to take whenever performing maintenance on any car is to ensure it is in a stable and secure position, well immobilised. This is to safeguard the operator's safety. Therefore, even in this case (although it seems like a simple task) where you want to open the fuel filler cap on your Smart Fortwo, park on a flat surface and, in addition to leaving the gear engaged, pull the handbrake firmly. At this point, open the rear hatch, remove the carpet covering the floor, and lift the panel covering the engine. In the bottom right corner (near the yellow cap - as shown in the images), there is a space that allows access to the operating lever. Lower this lever, and you will be able to access the fuel tank.
