Changing the gearbox oil on a Smart Fortwo W450 is a relatively simple task, but it requires a lift or four axle stands, as the car must be raised to access the underside while remaining level throughout the procedure. After lifting the car and ensuring it is level, you will have access to the gearbox, located at the rear and identifiable by the drive shafts connected to it. The gearbox will have two plugs: the top one for filling and the bottom one for draining.

These can only be unscrewed after placing a container underneath to catch the oil. After removing the plugs, allow the old oil to drain for about ten minutes until it stops flowing. Once all the oil has drained, replace the drain plug and proceed to add new oil through the fill hole at the top, using a large syringe as the hole is in a difficult vertical position.

During the filling process, oil will overflow from the fill plug, indicating the correct oil level in the gearbox. At this point, you can replace the fill plug and lower the car from the lift or axle stands.
