How to Replace the Alternator on a Smart Fortwo 451

To replace the alternator, start by disconnecting the battery, which is located under the mat on the passenger side. Remove the rear wheel on the passenger side and take off the cover that protects the engine, located in the wheel arch. From here, you can access the alternator belt, which you will carefully remove, as it will need to be reattached later. Disconnect the connectors that link the alternator to the engine. It is secured with 13 mm bolts that need to be unscrewed and it can be a bit tricky due to the very limited space. Now install the new alternator, facing the same space difficulties, mitigated as always by using a new part. Reposition the bolts, the connector, and the alternator belt that you previously removed. Now you can reattach the undertray hidden in the wheel arch and then the rear wheel on the passenger side. Reconnect the battery and the job is finished.
