To replace the gear knob on a Subaru Impreza, grasp the old knob located at the top of the lever and rotate it counterclockwise. This will allow you to free it, and you will need to completely remove the piece from the lever. Next, push down the leather gaiter that wraps around the gear lever to insert the retaining ring at the base of the knob. You can then reposition the gear gaiter, placing the knob on the lever and tightening it by rotating it clockwise.
