In this video we see how the variator of a scooter works, so how to transform the engine RPM into effective thrust. The main components are the movable pulley, the roller weights, and the belt. At low RPM the rollers are close to the axis (narrow pulley/short ratio), at high RPM the rollers move outwards (the pulley widens, and the ratio lengthens). It can break because the flat rollers no longer push, or the damaged belt slips. The springs of the modern variator are designed to start the scooter smoothly. The variator is never lubricated: graphite is sufficient and self-lubricating: oil attracts dust and kills the belt: the rollers must be checked frequently, and the belts must be of good quality.
