How a variable valve timing system works

Let’s see how a variable valve timing system works: its purpose is to change the timing of the valve openings. Since the cams are fixed, they cannot vary. However, when the engine reaches a certain RPM, the variable timing system allows the valves to change the opening angle to consume less fuel (and pollute less) at low revs, and at higher revs, it provides better performance through increased rotation, making the engine much more responsive. Manufacturers give various names to this device: they are commercial names, but it is always the same: a variable valve timing system.
