What Do RPM Sensors Do in an Engine?

What is the purpose of the RPM sensor? It informs the engine of the position of the pistons and their rotational speed, allowing the ECU to calculate the ignition strategy. If it fails, the ECU will not detect the engine running. It can be positioned on the crankshaft pulley, directly in the engine block, or on the flywheel. Modern engines have camshafts with variable valve timing, but the RPM sensor still monitors their position. Therefore, there will be one on the crankshaft, two on the camshaft, and in the gearbox. It can also be used for ABS, connected to the wheels.
