In this video, the technical difference between Boxer engines and Flat engines is explained: both are engines with horizontally oriented cylinders placed parallel to the ground. In a Boxer engine, the cylinders move towards each other, while in a Flat engine, they are arranged on two opposite banks and move symmetrically. Another difference is the arrangement of the crankshafts, which in the Boxer engine are located on each connecting rod pin of the shaft, causing the pistons to move in opposite directions. In the Flat engine, the connecting rods are paired on the same pin, making the pistons move in the same direction. This is a significant difference that greatly affects the stresses on the crankshaft, which is why the Boxer crankshaft is longer and has a greater number of crank arms to support the individual connecting rods.
