The first clarification is that they are not "snow tires" but "winter tires," precisely because they were designed for winter conditions: wet asphalt, slippery surfaces, ice, and especially cold asphalt. Compared to summer tires, they have small and numerous tread blocks, with a specific design to expel water and prevent hydroplaning: a characteristic feature is the "sipes," which are micro-slits on the tread that create a "claw effect" that increases grip on the surface and retains snow within them. The rubber compound is formulated to remain soft and elastic even at low temperatures. For the same car and speed, the stopping distance with winter tires on cold or wet asphalt can be halved compared to summer tires. They should be mounted when the temperature consistently drops below 7 °C and should be removed in spring when temperatures rise; they are not an option for the mountains but a safety device for the entire winter.
