How to test the air flow sensor (MAF) without tools

In this video, you will learn how to check if the air flow sensor is faulty with a simple test: start the engine and let it idle, then disconnect the electrical connector of the MAF (which is usually secured with a clip). If the engine stalls immediately, the MAF is functioning correctly (the ECU uses its data to regulate air and fuel). If the engine continues to run (albeit with reduced performance), the MAF is faulty, and the ECU is using default values. Try starting the car with the MAF disconnected: if the car does not start, it confirms that the MAF is essential for operation, and therefore it is functioning. If the car starts anyway, then the MAF is defective. Other signs of a faulty MAF include the car stuttering under acceleration, increased fuel consumption, difficulty starting when cold, and black smoke from the exhaust. If you do not want to replace the MAF, you can clean it, taking care not to touch the sensitive filaments with fingers or tools, and using a specific cleaner: allow it to dry completely before reassembling.
