How the Seatbelt Pretensioner Works in Our Car

The seatbelt system consists of three main components that work together: the belt and buckle, which we see and use every day; the retractor, which is the spring mechanism that allows the belt to extend and retract automatically, keeping the strap taut; and the pretensioner, which is shown in the video. This is a "pyrotechnic" device (containing an explosive charge) connected to the car's impact sensors. When they detect a collision, they activate a small electric current to the pretensioner, triggering its explosive charge, which turns a gear inside the retractor, violently pulling the belt back, tightening it immediately and securing the passenger's body firmly to the seat, even before the airbag deploys. This reduces the possibility of whiplash.
