How to Unscrew the Oil Sump Plug Without Getting Your Hands Too Dirty

Here is the procedure to avoid getting your hands too dirty when removing the oil sump plug: First, wear disposable gloves, then loosen the plug with a spanner as you normally would. When the plug is almost completely unscrewed and you feel the threads about to disengage, stop. Take a zip tie and pass the end with the locking tab under the head of the plug or, if it has a protruding edge, under the plug itself. Leave a good length of free tail (20/30 cm as a handle). Now hold the tail of the zip tie firmly with one hand, and with the other, finish unscrewing the plug with the spanner: as soon as the threads disengage, oil will start to flow out; at that point, pull the zip tie upwards, extracting the plug from the path of the oil and keeping it at a safe distance.
