Why the Tailgate of a Volkswagen Tiguan Won't Open

In this video, we can see the problem of a 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan with a tailgate that won't open. The problem arose due to rear damage, which also caused a broken rear light and water ingress in the rear compartment. The tailgate button has oxidised (the contacts have turned green due to oxidation) and no longer sends the opening signal. The first solution is to replace the lock, which also includes the rear camera: this is an expensive replacement, costing between £150 and £300. Another solution is to check the wiring, inspecting the connectors and cables under the tailgate for water damage. Obviously, the definitive solution is to replace the light, but a temporary solution is to seal it with waterproof tape, such as butyl tape. If the tailgate is stuck, you can open it from the inside (there is a lever inside the boot).
