Video tutorial
The window regulator mechanism of the New Beetle convertible is prone to a common failure: the cables get twisted and the spool breaks. The motor often still works, but the spool can no longer pull the cables. Remove the regulator from the vehicle. Locate the motor and unscrew the three Torx screws that secure it. The motor separates easily from the regulator. You can find the kit with the spool, two springs, and the cable guides on Amazon with code B0799K5YPY for £35.52, with delivery at £12.71. Remove the old spool and install the new one, threading the cables through the guides and into the spool. The larger cable should be wrapped with the larger spring, and the smaller cable with the smaller spring. Insert the spool into the motor and tighten the screws. Refit the regulator onto the vehicle. The job requires attention, but it is doable.
