The RPM (or position) sensor of the crankshaft plays a crucial role as it provides the engine management unit with information regarding the position of the pistons, which the unit uses to manage fuel injection sequences. One of the first symptoms of a malfunctioning sensor is the failure to start the engine, especially when hot. This sensor is located on the gearbox, but to access it, you must remove the starter motor. In some cases, the fault can be resolved with a simple cleaning of the sensor.
