Video tutorial

The video shows the replacement of the timing chain on an Audi S4 V8, a 4.2 engine known for having the chains at the rear. Unlike most engines, where the timing is at the front, here the chains are positioned at the back of the engine, between it and the transmission.

This means you cannot access it with the engine in place. The procedure shown requires removing the entire front end (bumper, headlights, radiator, crossmember).

Then, the engine/suspension assembly must be extracted by lowering it down or raising the body. Once out, remove the transmission, intake manifold, and rear covers to access the chains.

The video shows that one of the chain guides is broken, but such a significant intervention requires replacing the tensioner, guides, and often the balance shafts and their tensioners; indeed, the labor cost is so high that it is advisable to replace everything that is subject to wear.
