Instructions for Installing Adjustable Shock Absorbers

Model: BMW Serie 3 E46 - Years 1998-2006
Part: Suspension system

If you want to give your vehicle a sportier setup (at the expense of ride comfort), you can install adjustable shock absorbers which, in addition to being stiffer, also allow for preload adjustment of the spring through a specific collar. First, lift the vehicle on appropriate jack stands and remove the front wheel. Next, detach the sway bar link from the shock absorber and the bolt that secures the base of the shock absorber to the hub support to remove it. Then, access the engine bay and remove the nuts that secure the shock absorber mount to the strut tower to complete the disassembly. Proceed with the installation of the new shock absorbers by adjusting the upper plate to align the captive bolts with the holes in the strut tower. Once the shock absorber is secured to the tower, insert it and attach it to the hub support, then adjust the height of the plate to secure the sway bar link.
