What could be causing the noise of the gear lever on a Citroen C3 Picasso?

What are the reasons why the gear lever of our Citroen C3 Picasso may be noisy? The most common reason is the wear of the synchronizers, which are the rings that allow smooth gear engagement; or the gearbox bearings that may have worn out or been damaged and causing a rolling noise. Although less common, damage to a gear tooth can cause abnormal noises; or low or inadequate gearbox oil level can lead to poor lubrication. Specifically, for manual gearboxes, the control cables, linkages, or the gearbox linkage (the mechanism at the base of the lever) can also be damaged. Worn gearbox or engine mounts should not be ruled out either. So the causes can be many, and for an accurate diagnosis it is best to rely on an experienced mechanic.
