What is the purpose of the Mild Hybrid engine of the Fiat 500?

In this video, we discover some characteristics of the mild-hybrid engine of the Fiat 500 specifically, but in general of all vehicles that use this type of electrification: in fact, these vehicles combine a traditional internal combustion engine with a small electric motor, and a small battery. During braking and deceleration, the electric motor acts as a generator, recovering kinetic energy, which is stored in the battery. The accumulated energy is then used to assist the internal combustion engine during acceleration phases, reducing the workload and consequently fuel consumption. A reduction in consumption of between 10% and 15% compared to a traditional internal combustion engine is estimated, with a saving of about 0.7 liters every 100 km. In addition, the electric motor provides an additional boost during accelerations, making driving smoother, and CO2 emissions are lower. The mild hybrid represents a solution for those who want to reduce consumption without giving up the performance of a traditional engine.
