Working on a Hydraulic Lifter

A hydraulic lifter is a device used to maintain zero valve clearance in an internal combustion engine. Conventional valve lifters require regular adjustment to maintain a small gap between the valve and its rocker. This gap prevents parts from binding as they expand with engine heat, but it can also cause increased wear as parts collide with each other until they reach operating temperature. The hydraulic lifter is designed to compensate for this small tolerance. The hydraulic lifter, located between the camshaft and the valve of each engine, is a hollow steel cylinder that houses an internal piston. To solidify a lifter, you can proceed with small welds or disassemble the lifter to remove the internal spring and install washers to occupy the space and prevent the lifter piston from compressing.
