Replacing the lift pistons of the rear tailgate on a Jeep Cherokee XJ is not particularly difficult. You can purchase them at a low price (between £8 and £16 per piston, depending on the brand) from common e-commerce platforms. Start by moving the clip that holds the pin, located on the rear pillar. Once the pin is removed, the piston comes off easily. Do the same for the part attached to the tailgate. At this point, simply position the new piston in its upper housing; it is always easier to fit new parts than to remove the old ones, especially since new models usually fit in a bayonet style. Proceed in the same manner for the second piston. The job is complete.
