How to Replace Engine Oil and the Oil Filter

Maintaining engine oil is essential to prevent seizing and wear. When performing this task, you usually also replace the oil filter; it is a very simple operation, within everyone's reach! Sometimes, the recommended oil specification for the engine is written on the oil cap; to check the level, use the dipstick. To work more effectively, raise the vehicle and to facilitate draining the oil, remove the dipstick and the drain plug. First, remove the oil cap located on the sump and let the oil drain for a few minutes into a suitable container, then replace the cap, ensuring it is tightened properly, replacing the washer (if present) on the bolt. Next, locate the filter (which can be immersion or metal) and using a strap wrench, unscrew it; once loosened, you can continue unscrewing it by hand, being careful of the oil that will spill. After that, fit the new one in its place (also replacing the washers) and tighten it without overdoing it. Lower the vehicle and add the necessary amount of oil (as found in the maintenance manual) but do not add it all (if it says 3 litres, add 2.5 litres). Start the engine and add the remaining oil.
