The codes P13C271 (EGR Position) and P045B71 (Low EGR Actuation) on a Mercedes B-Class 2.1 diesel indicate a problem with the EGR valve or its actuator. The most common cause is carbon build-up that blocks movement. Before replacing the valve (costing around £60-70 for an OEM replacement), try cleaning it: remove the valve and thoroughly clean the carbon deposits with a specific cleaner and a brush. If the errors persist after cleaning, replace the actuator (the component that operates the valve). This failure is quite common on these engines. Regular cleaning can prevent the issue.
