The tailgate strut is actually a gas spring. Its function, besides holding the tailgate open, is to assist in opening and to slow down the descent during closing, preventing it from slamming shut. Replacing this spring is straightforward, but before proceeding with disassembly, check the compatibility of the replacement part, specifically the length and type of attachment. Open the tailgate and remove the clip from the lower ball joint. Support the tailgate and detach both the lower and upper joints, then reverse the process to fit the new spring.
