How to Replace the Front Shock Absorbers on a Renault Mégane III

To replace the front shock absorbers on a Renault Mégane III, loosen the wheel bolts, lift the front and support it on axle stands, then remove the wheels (place them under the car for safety). Disconnect the stabiliser bar link: unscrew the top nut with a 17 mm spanner and a 5 mm Allen key. Spray penetrating fluid on the ABS sensor and brake line hoses.

Unscrew the hose support with a 10 mm socket and remove it. Using a 21 mm socket, unscrew the two bolts at the base of the shock absorber while holding the nut with a 21 mm spanner. To access the upper mounts, remove the wipers and the windscreen frame: mark the position of the wipers, remove the nut covers, unscrew the nuts with a 16 mm spanner, and extract the arms (use a puller if stuck).

Remove the seal, lift the plastic rivets, and take off the frame. Unscrew the support bolt of the lower frame (10 mm socket with extension) and the two side bolts (Torx T30). Disconnect the electrical connector.

You now have access to the mounts: unscrew the three bolts with a 13 mm socket. Separate the base of the shock absorber from the hub with a fork.

To replace the shock absorber, (you can find the new one on eBay with code 205417922461 for £84.90, with free delivery), compress the spring using the specific tool (this operation is dangerous, take maximum care). Unscrew the top cap with an 18 mm spanner and a 6 mm Allen key, remove the cap and upper mount.

Pump the new cylinder to activate the system. Refit the boot, spring, mount, and cap, tightening the nut. Reposition the shock absorber, screw in the support (tighten with a torque wrench), clean the hub with a wire brush, refit the bolt and tighten.

Reconnect the link, flexible support, lower frame, windscreen frame, seal, and wipers. Refit the wheels and lower the car.
