To manually release the handbrake on a Renault Scenic, note that if you try to press the button and pull the lever, the handbrake does not release. Now, insert the key card into the ignition slot, hold the start button for 5 seconds, then try pressing the button and pulling the handbrake lever; it will release.

Once the handbrake is released, you will see a flashing handbrake warning light on the instrument cluster, indicating a fault with the message to pull the handbrake.
