We can try this method: make sure you are on a flat surface, then press the brake pedal all the way down and pull the handbrake lever three times. Now release the pedal, and if it has worked, the travel of the handbrake lever should have significantly shortened: in fact, it now reaches four clicks, while before it was much longer.
