Repairing the Ignition Key Switch

Key jamming in the ignition switch is a fairly common fault: it is due to wear of the internal components that, rubbing against each other, generate metallic dust that jams the mechanism; the situation worsens if you attempt to lubricate the lock with spray, which will tend to gum everything up, further jamming the system. The solution to the problem is therefore complete disassembly of all elements that make up the ignition switch, followed by thorough cleaning and reassembly. Once the ignition switch is removed from the steering column, extract the lock by inserting a pick into the slot along the edge of the lock and turning it with the key until it aligns with the hole in the plastic collar: only in this position can the lock be extracted. Proceed to remove all internal elements (plastic ring, aluminium ring with central sleeve, activation mechanism of the switch with spring and washer, steering lock pin): clean everything thoroughly and reassemble, aligning correctly. Perform function tests before reinstalling.
