To replace the thermostat in the Smart, you will need to open the rear hatch and then remove the trim panel at the base of the rear compartment: once this panel is removed, you will be able to locate the engine compartment. On the right side of the engine block, the hose for the coolant will be connected: by disconnecting it, you will be able to locate the underlying thermostat which must be removed from its housing to replace it with a new spare part.

Then you can insert the new part and reattach the hose.
