How to Remove the Battery from a Smart Fortwo (w450)

The battery of the Smart, unlike most cars, is located inside the cabin under the passenger side mat. First, remove the mat and lift the carpet to easily locate it. The battery will be secured in its housing with a metal strap that can be removed by unscrewing the nut that holds it in place.

Once the securing strap is removed, disconnect the cables; these will be attached to the two terminals of the battery with two clamps that can be detached by unscrewing the bolt on top of them.

It is advisable to disconnect the negative terminal first and to be careful not to create any contact between the two terminals. Once both terminals are disconnected, proceed to remove the acid vent tube located on the side of the battery.

For this operation, it is recommended to protect your hands with a pair of gloves. At this point, the battery will be completely disconnected from the car and can be extracted from its housing for recharging or replacement with a new one.
