How to open the battery compartment door on a Smart? The battery in the Smart is located on the passenger side under the carpet. Open the car door and lift the floor mat (passenger side). Use your fingers to release the locking lever of the battery cover panel, then remove it. Once the compartment is open, you will find the battery. Remove the securing pins from the battery terminals, then take the battery out of the compartment and replace it with a new one (same voltage). Close the battery compartment after installation. Start the Smart Fortwo and check its operation.
