What is the lambda probe used for?

What exactly is the lambda probe, also known as the "oxygen sensor", used for? This is a fundamental component of the exhaust system, and its main function is to measure the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust gases and transmit this information to the ECU. The ECU then, receiving these data from the lambda probe, can accurately regulate the amount of fuel injected into the engine, allowing to obtain the best air/fuel mixture and reducing emissions. The lambda probe also helps the catalytic converter, which needs a precise air/fuel mixture to function properly, and therefore reducing harmful emissions. It is made up of a ceramic element that contains an electrochemical cell, which is sensitive to the concentration of oxygen in the exhaust gases and generates an electric voltage that varies according to the amount of oxygen present. It is usually positioned upstream of the catalytic converter, but in many cases we also find one downstream, to check its efficiency.
